Known for his series of YouTube video series entitled ‘100 Strange Sounds’, Joo Won Park returns to NOREMIXES for his second album, Modulationist, which finds the composer incorporating live instrumentation into his bed of electronic disturbances.

On his previous NOREMIXES album, Overundertone, Joo Won Park toned down the raw and often aggressive nature of the ‘100 Strange Sounds’ series into more quirky melodic passages that mixed foundsound with his SuperCollider experiments. With Modulationist, the composer pits live performers against the computer with the entire album arching towards a full-on digital takeover. Percussionist Hunter Brown, joins Park on vibraphone during opener, ‘Hallelujah’, a sparse starting place. Complexity develops with ‘Armor+2’ featuring Giovanni Bertoni on clarinets. ‘Notation for Synth’ provides a playful break from the tension as electronics take center stage. This is followed by ‘JNNJ’ which pits dueling percussion against electronics in the album’s most rhythmically challenging work. ‘Swamps, Showers, and Creatures’ utilizes foundsound and sparse electronics with bursts of oboe, for the last sign of acoustic instrumentation on Modulationist. The electronics takeover, however, fitting closer ‘Modulationist’ shows just how hands-on Park is with his electronics as the composer utilizes no-input mixing for a full on sonic assault on the listener.

There are three previously-unreleased tracks in this album. Cmin13 and Modulationist are created exclusively for this release. The two tracks are examples of the musical directions I am currently interested in. I also included a stereo “studio” version of Singaporean Crosswalk. It sounds quite different from the live recordings as it has different ways to spatialize the sound.

A new album is out

120V is out now on Amazon as a downloadable album.

This is a compilation album of my solo works from 2002 to 2013. All tracks except one are available for streaming in Soundcloud (The SCloud has a better streaming quality, and you can listen to the entire track). The album-only track, also named as 120v, is a no-input mixer piece that is quite different from all other works included in this album.
Visceral Media also made a video interview about me and my album. The guest in this video also appears in some of my works.

A New Album is on the Way

Visceral Media Records will be releasing my new album in few weeks. The album is titled 120V, and it is a “best of” album that contains my works composed in the past 10+ years. It also has a new track for no-input mixer and computer (marked with * in the track listing).

The album has quite a variety in terms of electronic music style. I feel very happy to share an album that contains pieces that reflects who I was and who I am. My life and music has changed immensely since I started to make electronic after plugging things into 120V outlets in the US.

Charles Shriner (aka dRachEmUsiK) and I collaborate as Side Dish Side Affect. We released an album in May 2014, and I am very happy with the result. Below is a track in the album called Fermented Stingray.

Charles probably has been performing electronic music before I even got my first synthesizer. He is a multitalented musician who runs a record label, produces albums, tours as a performer, broadcasts a weekly radio show, and runs an electronic music festival (check out charlesshriner.com for his credentials). If you need a music tech guy in Indianapolis, I strongly suggest that you contact Charles.

I first met him at Electro-Music Festival in 2009, and became friends ever since. I particularly remember his excellent improvisation workshops and open-mindness to all kinds of music. Charles and I also share love of good food. We named our group after a homemade Korean dinner at my place. I still remember the taste of an oxtail dish I had at Charle’s place during the recording session. Even our track names in the album are crude translation of Korean side dishes.
